Ovo Energy case study
OVO Energy is a major UK energy provider known for its focus on sustainability, smart technology, and customer experience. As part of their digital transformation, OVO invested in building a modern mobile app to give users better control over their energy usage and account management.
I joined the OVO Energy mobile team to support the design of their iOS and Android native apps, working on both UX and UI across phone and tablet. The goal was to create a flexible, intuitive interface that supported a wide range of user actions — from checking meter readings to receiving tailored updates and promotions.
The app needed to strike a balance between functionality and personalisation, while remaining simple enough for broad customer adoption.
Overview
Research
We began with a deep dive into OVO’s existing customer base, conducting user interviews, competitive product research, and sessions with internal stakeholders to define clear goals and user expectations.
I worked closely with other UX designers to interpret personas, assess product-market fit, and define user needs. From there, we aligned with product leadership on experience principles that would shape the app’s structure.
Wireframes
I created early paper flows and low-fidelity wireframes to explore and discuss with the team. These were used to validate basic navigation, prioritise features, and highlight problem areas before investing in higher-fidelity designs.
User Testing
Wireframes and prototypes were tested in OVO’s London and Bristol offices. We gathered feedback from both engaged users and less tech-savvy participants to ensure the experience worked across different user types.
Findings were incorporated directly into revised flows and the design system.
UI Design
With structure and flows confirmed, I began building the final UI in both Sketch and Photoshop. I focused on simplicity, clean visual hierarchy, and integrating OVO’s brand voice into a modern mobile interface.
